My husband and I took a prenatal class and part of this video was featured, showing swaddling techniques and the “5 S’s” to calm babies. I decided to get the whole video and I found it very useful to reinforce these concepts to calm our newborn. There does tend to be some repetition, but this helped to keep the main ideas in your memory. We have used the swaddling, shushing, swinging/ jiggling, etc to help soothe our baby, and he has been a pretty happy so far! It has given us some good tools to use when the baby starts to cry and we have already fed and changed him. I would recommend this video for all first time parents. I also got the book, and it goes into some other details about the reasoning behind the use of these techniques. I like to know this kind of information, but if you just want to quickly get the techniques, the video is perfect. It helps to see what they are talking about, particularly with the swaddling and the jiggling, which are hard to describe just in writing or even with diagrams.

This DVD is not of a professional standard, it is more of a home video. It shows Dr. Karp carrying out the 5 S over and over again. This worked on my daughter but only with other people as I couldn’t get the hang of it and it was easier for me to breastfeed her to sleep or to rock the push chair while swaddled with white noise playing. There are some helpful troubleshooter questions at the end of the DVD for the under 3 month olds.
Basically it’s swaddling the baby tight, side laying on the lap (the most complicated thing to get right) swaying or jiggling the baby in a certain way (babies head needs to bobble about, I got the same kind of effect by wiggling the pram slightly with one hand), shushing in the babies ear (we used white noise radio static), and sucking (which didn’t work for us as the pacifier is a no go with our little one). However I think this should work for most babies as it simulates the womb environment.

Yes, you may be a parent who ends up with a perfect, quiet, charming infant who sleeps through everything and coos when he/she is awake. Many of us aren’t so lucky, though. And if you’re in the latter group, you MUST get this book. (Better yet, get the dvd. Who has time to read with an infant? And mom, dad, even grandma, etc can watch at the same time.)

There’s no pretense here. No philosophizing. Karp explains simply that for many babies, they struggle through the “4th trimester” and need the extra comforts that you can give them. (This is not just preemies or kids who had trouble in the womb or getting delivered. Could be any baby. Any.) He tells you EXACTLY what to do and how to do it. And IT WORKS.

Our son was an angel until we hit the 3-week mark. Then boom, suddenly he was crying whenever he wasn’t sleeping or eating. Constant crying. Killing-every-last-nerve-at-the-top-of-his-lungs crying. After returning from my first trip to the store and finding my husband in pieces because my son had screamed for the whole 3 hours that I’d been gone, we remembered that someone had recommended that I buy the HBOTB dvd. In desperation, we pulled it out and watched. We shushed and swaddled and rocked the baby exactly as shown/explained.

    1) Again, it works…
    2) …but it may take some time to get it right. The right angle to hold the baby. The right way to swaddle. (We used the Anais + Aden (or whatever they’re called) gauze wraps but later, we also used the swaddle-me velcro types. Both work great.) The right shushing sound…
    3) …which for us, turned out to be a hairdryer. Stunning. It worked so well that we put them in every room. I even packed one in the diaper bag from time to time. (I worry that I hurt his hearing or brain or something b/c we used it so often, but I figure that crying 16 hrs a day couldn’t be healthy either.)
    4) And last thing: if you find yourself in the situation where these techniques are needed, Karp’s book lets you know that no, you did not do anything wrong. You are not to blame, and you are not bad parents. The person who lucked out with the perfect infant angel is not a better mom or dad who is more capable than you. Simply, your baby needs the comfort and you have the ability to provide it. He gives you confidence and hope (which is hard to find when you’re feeling so desperate for yourself and so sad and concerned for your child).

IMO, this is a great thing to have even before you have a kid (whether it’s your first or 14th) because the techniques can be used even for the perfect angels. But if you’re reading this because you’re at wit’s end and wondering what you’re doing wrong… this book/dvd is probably your answer.

Good luck to those who are going through this. Our son grew out of it around the 4 mos mark and has been that perfect, nary-a-meltdown kid ever since. I often feel like it’s earned having spent so many days and nights swaddled baby in one arm and hairdryer in the other. I have no idea how we would have gotten through those months without HBOTB. (p.s. posted the same for the book)

This is my third purchase of this.
The ideas in here are soothing to babies. It helped both my husband and myself so much and I have been able to sooth other people’s infants when I’m babysitting or things like that. I give copies to friends when they are expecting now. It’s not too long and you watch it once and it helps SO MUCH. Watch it then share it its so helpful.

I have watched this for 10 years with young parents to be as counselor at a crisis pregnancy center. The parents come out feeling equipped to make their newborn baby happy, and will get more sleep at night! I wish I had the knowledge for my first baby, who had colic and cried for 3 months. I’ve also tried the suggested techniques with my grandchildren – and they all work very well! I’m sure the good pediatrician learned all the suggestions from the young moms he’s helped through many years. Dr. Harvey Karp is funny, loves the kids, they love him, and it’s a fun video to watch! I’ve probably seen it 100 times and still enjoy watching with the young parents. The best video we had. Don’t hesitate to get this for yourself or as a gift! I also highly recommend the Happiest Toddler on the Block.

I bought this DVD because a fellow new Mommy friend said I HAVE TO WATCH IT before our little one arrives. She said they had a really tough first three weeks with their newborn, until someone recommended this DVD to them. After they watched it, they learned how to comfort and calm their son and things finally went smoothly afterwards. She said they wished they had heard about this video BEFORE their son was born instead of after the fact. It would have saved them 3 weeks of sleepless nights. Now I see why.

As soon as it arrived, I put the DVD in to watch it. I was completely surprised and enlightened to learn the different techniques to comfort and calm our baby. The Pediatrician explains 5 different techniques that work to immediately calm your baby. They work because they trigger a baby’s natural reflex, much like a knee reflex in an adult.

My husband walked in before the technique instructions even started and paused to watch a minute or so. Then he said, “So I can calm her by putting her on her side like that?” I just giggled. He was in and out while this video was on and asked me what I was watching. When I told him and he realized that we now own this DVD he actually got excited. He asked if I could leave it out for him to watch on his own. I was SHOCKED at his peaked interest.

After watching this DVD, I feel so much more prepared for our little one’s arrival. I feel more confident that I have 5 new things to try with her to cam her down when she cries.

This DVD includes other questions and answers that I found extremely helpful as well. THIS will be my go-to Baby Shower gift from now on!!! If you’re even thinking twice about do you really need this, trust me, you DO. You’ll thank me later!!!!!

If I’d known about ‘The Happiest baby on the block’ before my daughter was born (7 weeks ago) it would have saved me a lot of heartache.
it does 2 invaluable things –
    • Gives you several tricks up your sleeve to soothe your inconsolable crying baby
    • Makes you realise you’re not a failure as a mother

    Dr Karp knows his stuff.
His theory is that when our babas are born, they’re not yet ready. He says we should think of those first 3months as our 4th trimester and we should be doing everything to recreate the feeling of the womb to comfort our babies when they cry. Makes perfect sense… Swaddling works wonders, as does shushing….Dummies have their place (although I didn’t introduce one till after 4wks when breastfeeding was well established) Some of the others take more practice, but watching this paediatrician take a baby from screaming its lungs out to chilling out & almost passing out in a matter of seconds is wonderful.

Dr Karp is such a delight. The Robin Williams of the medical world.
