Sleep can sometimes seem as elusive as the Abominable Snow Man. It seems just out of reach, lurking in the shadows, but never completely comes into view. Try as we may, we never seem to get enough of it and we always seem to be tired. In our world of hyper-stress and constant screen, time sleep can be a dream which never becomes reality. But Nicole Moshfegh has crafted a book which might just give you hope that the elusive can become real.

The Book of Sleep in some regards is a real eye-opener. Some of the things which seem to help the sleep process are actually counterproductive as explained by the author. Those proverbial sleep aids, like alcohol or pills might actually be sedating you without the benefits of real sleep. You’ve once again settled for the illusion while the real restfulness of a full night’s sleep continues to elude you.

Not only is the book full of useful information on what to and not do in order to achieve the goal of sleep, but she also coaches the reader through a variety of processes which might help if used appropriately. Not only that, but she continually points the reader to other resources which might prove useful should those she mentions in the book not work.

Although Moshfegh has tried to craft a comprehensive book of sleep strategies the book is easy to read. Each of the sections is short and to the point, not wrapped in a lot of mumbo jumbo. Not only is the book a easy read, but she has crafted it in such a way that those in need of help can come back to it time and again as they focus in on one or another strategy to get them to their goal – a restful night’s sleep.

Upon request the publisher sent me a copy of the book to review.

I have read 6 sleep books. This by far the best. It is simple to implement and has many ideas to help get better sleep.

I’ve been struggling with insomnia for several years now and have often felt overwhelmed by the various articles and research I’ve found online. Dr. Moshfegh’s book made addressing my sleep issues feel so much less daunting. The book is very well-organized and written in a way that’s easy to understand and follow without feeling intimidating. Dr. Moshfegh comes across as supportive and empathetic and she really really made me feel empowered, and gave me hope that I really can beat insomnia. I’m feeling much more well rested already!

    I love this book!
It is the best book that I have read and own about coping with insomnia. The information is precise, containing only information needed to design a plan to beat insomnia. Although there are 75 excellent strategies; one can pick, and mix them to design a personal plan of action. I definitely recommend this book to anyone working to overcome insomnia.

  8. B. Baystate

There is nothing new here. If you have struggled with sleep you have most likely tried all these techniques before.

  9. K. Kim

I got this book thinking it might help with the poor sleep I have been getting. I don’t think I have insomnia and after reading what Dr. Moshfegh says on what insomnia is, I feel I actually do!

The book itself is easy to read and understand. If you’re like me and google around your issues you know how mixed everyone is on the solutions for what ails you. This book set my mind at ease and understanding why I can’t sleep well. I started getting better sleep after three weeks of following the strategies in the book.

I must say I did not think I would get this far with just a book but today I slept for 9hrs and even my wife thanks Dr. Moshfegh. I recommend this book to anyone with sleep issues or insomnia. The parts about building better habits and why we can’t sleep well really help me and I will be giving this book out to my co-workers for the holidays.
